Class 2 homework video transcript
Pause to work along. The homework takes 20–30 minutes; bring your records to the next class. No advance submission.
Goal
For the class 2 homework, search 「蜘蛛の糸」 (The Spider’s Thread) and compare the results with your worksheet. Matching lines are not counts of movement events. Pause the video to work on your own computer.
Workspace
Open Terminal on macOS, or Git Bash or WSL on Windows. Use pwd to check where you are. Create and enter the work folder with cd. If you already have the class folder, open it. Do not type the prompt’s dollar sign.
pwd
mkdir -p dh-b-2026
cd dh-b-2026
pwdSource
Download the class text from Soranoha as story.txt. In curl, -f fails on HTTP errors, -L follows redirects, and -o sets the output file path. Downloading overwrites an existing story.txt, so keep your worksheet and notes in separate files. Check the first lines with head. A fallback copy is available on the class page.
curl -fL -o story.txt https://soranoha.org/works/000092_000879/plaintext
head -n 3 story.txtSearch up
Search for the literal string のぼ. --color=auto highlights matches in a terminal on macOS and Linux. -n prints line numbers; -F searches for fixed strings instead of regular expressions. Preserve the spaces and straight quotes. Scroll back to inspect long output, and copy the command and all output lines into your notes.
grep --color=auto -nF 'のぼ' story.txtSearch down
Repeat the search for 落ち and save the command and output. Highlighting is a reading aid; losing the color when pasting is fine if the text and line numbers remain.
grep --color=auto -nF '落ち' story.txtCounts
のぼ occurs 12 times across 5 matching lines; 落ち occurs 5 times across 4 matching lines. -c outputs the matching line count; -o prints each match on a separate line, and piping to wc -l gives the total occurrence count. Use 12 and 5 to check your inventory, not as counts of movement events.
grep -cF 'のぼ' story.txt
grep -oF 'のぼ' story.txt | wc -l
grep -cF '落ち' story.txt
grep -oF '落ち' story.txt | wc -lContext
The string のぼ also matches あのぼんやり: “that dimly shining mountain of needles.” This is not a climbing expression. Record a string match separately from your movement judgment, using the whole paragraph.
Inventory
List every expression containing のぼ or 落ち, once per occurrence. Mark whether that exact occurrence is one of the seven worksheet rows and whether it expresses movement. たぐりのぼり始めました is worksheet row 3; 一生懸命にのぼった is a different occurrence outside the worksheet. Keep source line numbers and enough surrounding text to identify repeats.
Example
Example outside the worksheet: 一生懸命にのぼった, Part II, source line 11. Mover: Kandata; direction: up; happens/happened. In のぼった甲斐があって, the phrasing presents the climb as having happened. Record both the evidence and why it supports your judgment, using the criterion you revised in class. Explain any different judgment.
Finish
Bring both commands and their outputs; the inventory of 12 のぼ and 5 落ち occurrences; two new movement annotations, one upward and one downward, outside the worksheet; and one sentence about whether the revised criterion worked or what was missing. No advance submission. If a terminal is unavailable, search the same text in your browser and record that method.
